Last Update 04/30/97 by George F. Hamstra ******************************************************************************** * The intention of this directory is to make public domain packages easily * * transferable and installable to users of the AT&T 3B1/7300 computer. If * * you are aware of any package contained within this diretcory which is NOT * * public domain and freely distributable, please conatct me AT ONCE so that * * I may remove it! * ******************************************************************************** Welcome to the "installable" directory! All of the files under this directory may be installed on your 7300/3B1 by transmitting them with "uucp", or by downloading them and copying them to diskette. Files that end in .Z are compressed and will need to be "uncompressed" prior to installation. You may determine whether a particular file will require an 8 or 10 sector diskette after it has been uncompressed by checking the size of the file (using ls -l). A file that indicates an uncompressed size of 323,585 bytes will require an 8 sector disk. A size of 404,480 indicates a 10 sector disk will be required. To copy the uncompressed file out to diskette you should do the following: 1. uncompress FILENAME+IN.Z 2. dd if=FILENAME+IN of=/dev/rfp021 This will create an installable diskette that you may keep as a backup. You should then leave the diskette in the drive and use the System Adminstration Software Setup Install Software From Floppy Diskette menu choices of the "install" login. You may also choose to install the software via the "Install Software Received From Electronic Mail" if you have first uncompressed the files and they are in the proper directory, namely: /usr/spool/uucppublic/receive/install Please note that there is a new "CATALOG+IN" that I have modified to call my system and allow for the installation of compressed files. I am working on updating the descriptions for this CATALOG. This NEW STORE contains approximately 75 installables that were not part of the original AT&T STORE! If you have any additions please contact me. I have become quite proficient at producing "installable's", so if you would like to submit something and have me make the installable that would be alright with me! Many of the uucp installables will give you the option of creating a backup diskette copy - you must have a pre-formatted diskette ready when prompted. I have taken a considerable amount of time to create installable versions of many packages that were distributed as source code, or in "cpio", "tar" or other methods. Sometimes I did this with little testing (knowing someone would let me know of the error of my ways when they attempted to install something). My main reason for creating this directory was to allow people to easily install many of the nice packages that have been distributed over the Net (Internet/NetNews). Obviously, I am not the author of all of these packages, nor do I take credit for all of the "installable" versions, many actually came from the old AT&T "store" system that AT&T so wisely decided to shut down ;-( Additionally, I would like to thank Andy Fyfe at CalTech for his contributions, and for sending me the entire archives from CalTech. (Unfortuantely, they came on a SUN tape that had names longer than the standard 14 characters allowed on the UNIX PC - consequently there are some "name changes" between CalTech and my stuff. (ALL of the CalTech stuff may be found under /pub/3b1/caltech) I'd also like to thank David Brenaman for sending me a tape of all of the Ohio State archives. They may be found under /pub/3b1/osu. You will also notice a subdirectory called "STORE" under this directory. This is the original AT&T store contents as released by AT&T. Though my directory /pub/3b1/installable duplicates most if not all of the files under this directory, my copies were produced using the steps outlined above (dd). The /pub/3b1/osu/STORE are files that may be decompressed, and then "cat'ed" to a diskette of either 8 or 10 sector (assuming they will fit on the diskette). The reason I choose the "dd" method was to give an immediate indication as to whether an 8 or 10 sector diskette was required. My method does create files that are slightly larger than the original STORE files. (My versions may also be slightly different......) If you have suggestions send me mail at hostage@ameritech.net Paths that works are: cnote!hostage (If you have a connection to my system.....) or send Email to hostage@ameritech.net - sorry, there is currently no FTP access. I also have a mirror of the AT&T Lisle 3B2 bbs - /pub/3b2/bbslisl. My intentions are to make this system a repository for 3B1/7300 and 3B2 public domain software.
